Hiking

The easy, largely flat, 2.6-mile Oak Ridge Trail Loop trail meanders through sand hills and along the lake shore.

To start the hike, leave The Lodge and cross over a short boardwalk heading southwest. Here the trail is typical of coastal Georgia with its moist, swampy terrain. Trees like tupelo, cypress, maples, and longleaf pines are common trees in the area. Hikers can admire a stand of turkey oaks as well as swamps laden with cypress and oaks.

A boardwalk at the north end of the lake is an excellent spot for birdwatching, and hikers may see birds like blue heron soaring the skies around the lake.

Two of Georgia’s rarest species, the harmless indigo snake and the gopher tortoise may also be seen from the trail.
