As spring nears, more golfers are coming. Now is the best time to maximize the whole Little Ocmulgee park experience.
Imagine you are going on a mini lakeside vacation to a state park with brand new cabins so comfy and new that you won’t believe it’s a state park!
Little Ocmulgee, or “Little O” to long timers, is a Southern oasis for campers, golfers and nature enthusiasts. The Park offers fishing, dining, golfing, hiking, paddling, cycling and relaxing – and swimming at the lake and private pool in the summer season, splash pad included!
My husband and I are going before Spring Break. Now is the time for golfers to get here. Our best friends who love golf even more are joining us and I’m so excited I feel like a kid going to camp again! Little O’s peak seasons for golf are spring and fall, but players are on the 18-hole Wallace Adams Golf Course all year long.
There are 10 newly built and secluded lakeside cabins with spacious living rooms and cable TV, two bathrooms and two bedrooms. We have a full kitchen with all the amenities and for rest, four beds and bedding and bath linens are provided. We can’t wait to gather for cookouts on the patio grill, and movies at night in these awesome new accommodations.
It’s peaceful here and you’ll likely see deer walking across the park in the mornings. Or a gopher tortoise sunning itself on the edge of the golf course by the woods.
Often described as ‘friendly,’ the course design does not exclude any playing style and is suitable for golfers of all ages and abilities. You’ll love the classic South Georgia feeling of a course lined with magnolias, loblolly pines and willows. The full-service pro shop offers golf accessories, clothing, club rentals and a snack and beverage bar. For those new, or simply warming up, there is a driving range, chipping area and practice green.
You’ll see sunsets over the 265-acre lake every night of the year, clouds permitting. I could sit under an oak tree dripping with Spanish moss and compose a country ballad about my love for serenity here. Within Little O’s seclusion, the otherwise busy world seems far away. Guests are more relaxed here, like they left a bag of worries at the front gate and entered a paradise where recreation and relaxation coexist.
About 100,000+ visitors to the park come from within a 100-mile radius and from a north-south migration between Florida and the states above it. For some, it’s a day trip. Perhaps it’s a family reunion at the pavilion, a golf session, or a swim at Thaxton Beach in the summer. For most others, it’s about enjoying the 54 campsites, 60 modern-style lodge rooms and the 10 brand-new lakeside cabins that keep us staying longer in the embrace of South Georgia country.
I always recommend the light hiking here, to put your feet in the white sand hills of Georgia and see the magnificent growth of plants in this region along four miles of trails. Interpretive panels give identities to the plants and animals described.
One round is all it will take to see why golfers around the Southeast continue to love Wallace Adams as one of their favorite courses in Georgia. We’re off to Little O soon, and hope to meet new people who love this park as much as we do, while we catch up with our besties for golf, and more golf!
